Here Is My Story...

After Rush's life came unraveled and hit what Rush describes as rock bottom, Rush spent close to three decades on a pilgrimage with Christ. It wasn't til the last 5 years, that Rush could finally see what was finally undeniable... The victory that Christ had over his life had come to fruition in his eyes.

Where do I begin...

I didn’t have a childhood; I had survival training. My parents—teenagers themselves—weren’t ready for the weight of raising a family. My home was a battlefield. My father and my mother divorced when I was five years old.  The need to provide outweighed the need to parent and my mother worked herself to exhaustion just to keep food on the table. Emotional warmth? It didn’t exist. I wasn’t nurtured—I was forged, in the fires of neglect and conflict.

For many, that would’ve been the end.

When I enlisted in the military,  I was  looking to escape and searching for structure. Instead, I found chaos. The horrors of the Middle East didn’t stay on the battlefield; they followed me home, etched into my mind. When the bombs stopped, my internal war began. I came back not as the man who left, but as a shell of him—haunted by the ghosts of what I had been through.

Three years after returning home, I was overwhelmed by the crushing weight of my mental health. I didn’t see a way out, so I tried to end my life.

That kind of pain—the feeling of being trapped with no escape—is something most people will never understand. The fight to stay alive, to find meaning after trauma, is one of the hardest battles anyone can face. But I survived. I came dangerously close to losing, but I’m still here.

And things didn’t get easier after that.

How do you face a storm like that inside yourself? For me, like for so many others, I tried to numb the pain. I turned to substance abuse, which eventually landed me in prison. But here’s where things got even darker: I was recruited into the Mexican Mafia, becoming a right-hand man in one of the most dangerous prison gangs in the country. At that point, it felt like my fate was sealed—trapped in violence and self-destruction, with no way out.

The prison riots. The violence. The fear. But nothing tested my toughness more than solitary confinement. I spent 30 days locked in a small cell, completely isolated from the outside world. It’s just you and your thoughts. That’s where you come face-to-face with yourself—the raw, unfiltered version of you. There’s no escaping the reality of who you are in solitary confinement. You break, or you survive.

I saw young men in there—18, 19 years old—just starting their life sentences. Kids who’d made terrible mistakes, locked up for crimes that would haunt them for the rest of their lives. And yet, they were just beginning. The weight of it, seeing their faces, knowing that they were staring down a lifetime behind bars—it changes you. You start to see the humanity in even the hardest criminals.

In 2013, during a routine VA visit,  identifying markers were found related to severe combat PTSD. For the first time, I had a name for my suffering. And that diagnosis wasn’t just a label—it was the lifeline that pulled me out of the abyss. With the right help, I didn’t just start surviving—I began to thrive. I turned my pain into purpose. I earned three degrees and climbed out of a life that felt destined for destruction.

But even as I rebuilt my life, guilt and shame followed me. You see, what’s rarely talked about in redemption stories is the weight of what it took to get there. For me, it’s not just the trauma of war or the time in prison that lingers—it’s the guilt over the choices I made in those darkest times, the people I hurt, the mistakes I can’t undo. I still carry that today. There are moments when I ask myself: Was all that suffering really necessary? Why did I have to fall so far just to rise again? It’s a heavy burden to carry. Even when you’ve come out the other side, you still bear the weight of where you’ve been.

But through this journey, I’ve also learned something about humanity. Whether it was the brutality of combat, the isolation of prison, or the struggles of everyday life, I’ve seen this: everyone is fighting their own battles. In prison, behind the hardened exteriors, were people shaped by pain and brokenness, just like me. On the battlefield, beneath the armor, were soldiers carrying invisible scars. And in life, most people are fighting wars we’ll never see.

This empathy became one of the most profound lessons I’ve learned. It reshaped my understanding of what it means to be tough—not just for myself, but for others. Real toughness isn’t just about surviving your own battles—it’s about reaching out to help someone else survive theirs.
